Oh, yeah...I still knit

I notice I haven't posted any knitting pictures lately. Here are the socks I'm currently working on.

Aren't they gorgeous? I've tossed the label already, but I think the colorway is called "Water" from Cherry Tree Hill. I love the feel of the tightly spun merino. Because Mom raved about the fit of the afterthought heel following Dawn Brocco's adaptation, I thought I'd also see if I could do Brocco's version of the star/round toe (but toe-up, of course). Pretty easy -- I just increase at six points every round until I got to 24 stitches on my needles, then increase every third round until I get to the desired circumference (in this case, 60 stitches on size 2 needles). I like it, and I think it will feel better on the toes than the more usual banded toe (here pictured, but since frogged and reknit).

I like the round heel, but it looks so different I was taken aback at first. I haven't tried the technique on the toes yet. Maybe I'll try it with the next pair! I didn't like the afterhthought heel much though. I'm going to try a new toe up heel next time.

JoVE pointed me to your post on the Urban Aran cardigan - I made the same for my partner who is not long and lean - she is rather short and has a small waist and flared hips. I guess you are probably a different shape again, but just wanted to say that I reckon the pattern would be pretty flattering to any shape...

So the question is how many did you cast on and how? I keep wondering whether an Emily Ocker beginning (used a lot for square or round shawls knit from the centre) would be a good way to start a round toed sock. Of course, I'm too lazy to try it out myself, preferring to stick wtih the current formula.

JoVE, I cast on 3, doing a Turkish cast-on with one long needle. The three stitches turn to 6 in Magic Loop. I'll have to look into the Emily Ocker beginning. Thanks for mentioning it.

Yes, Don, I think doing the Turkish cast on would work better. The Ocker caston would leave a "butt hole"!!

What kind of increase do you do? I never am happy with mine; I've tried so many!

Did you say you do an increase EVERY round? Or did you mean, every OTHER round? Of course, all of us are too lazy to try it out! Just tell us, ok?

TG--

I've been making yarn-overs, then knitting into the back of those yarn-overs on the next round.

To do a toe-up version of the Dawn Brocco toe, I increase every round until I have 24 stitches, then every third round until I get the right circumference.

Mike complained that the toe was too tight for him. (He has the same size foot as my mom, so I usually have him try on the socks I knit for her). If she feels the same when I give her the socks this weekend, I'll probably stick with a more standard, banded toe.
